Paramedics are healthcare professionals who treat a wide variety of patients in advanced life support. They most often work in pre-hospital and out-of-hospital settings, so, in essence, they bring emergency room services directly to patients at home, work or in public settings. In Lexington, paramedics serve as part of the overall emergency service system for the LFD.
The primary purpose of the paramedic program is to prepare competent entry-level Emergency Medical Technicians-Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains to enter the profession.
The paramedic role is closely related to other healthcare positions, especially the emergency medical technician role. However, paramedics often operate at a higher grade, with more independence and responsibility. Thousands of lives are saved because of paramedics each year.
The Lexington Division of Fire and EMS is Kentucky's first accredited fire-based paramedic program. The LFD received its official accreditation on July 31, 2014, from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Education Programs for Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).
