Emergency Management issues Phase I Heat Alert

The Lexington Division of Emergency Management has issued a Phase I Heat alert calling on agencies that work with vulnerable populations to ensure emergency plans are in place.

The alert, activated when the Heat Index is expected to reach 95 degrees Fahrenheit, is effective this morning, and continues through Saturday evening.

Under the alert, people experiencing homelessness may ride LexTran to cooling stations free of charge. Outreach teams, including the HopeMobile, Lexington Street Outreach, and the Compassionate Caravan, will distribute water throughout the community, and help people get to shady areas or cooling stations.

Lexington’s community centers are open into the early evening, including Dunbar, Kenwick, Castlewood, and Tates Creek, and are available as cooling stations.
