Give sixty minutes to our planet this Saturday during Earth Hour, an opportunity to participate in volunteering, learning or helping others improve the earth. Earth Hour is celebrated worldwide on Saturday, March 23. The City of Lexington and our community partners are pleased to offer several Earth Hour events and activities for our residents.
“Lexington has participated in Earth Hour for several years since 2014,”said Jada Walker Griggs, Sustainability Program Manager Senior. “As we enter spring, it’s a good reminder to set aside time to do something good for the planet. We are excited to offer such a wide range of activities this year that residents can participate in throughout the day.”
This year, Earth Hour wraps up Water Week, a community-wide effort to appreciate and explore Lexington’s creeks. The sixth annual Reforest 5K Run/Walk at Hisle Farm Park is part of both events and supports Lexington’s Reforest the Bluegrass efforts to increase Lexington’s tree canopy and restore streamside forests.
For anyone looking for a slower pace than a 5K, there will also be a guided mindfulness walk at Veterans Park, bird walks at McConnell Springs and Raven Run and a showing of “Our Planet” at the Marksbury Family Branch of the Lexington Public Library. There are also volunteer opportunities to clean up the natural areas at both McConnell Springs and Raven Run.
Finish up Earth Hour with a Hot Chocolate Ride along the Legacy Trail at Coldstream Dog Park, 1850 Pisacano Drive, at 5:30 p.m. Bring your bike, helmet and lights, and we’ll provide the hot chocolate.
For those who’d rather celebrate at home, there are lots of options! Plant a pollinator garden using Plant by Numbers, free plans for native gardens. Spend an hour with lights off throughout your home, telling stories or playing games by candlelight. Practice reuse by mending clothes or making a craft from materials you already have.
