Royal Avenue Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation

UPDATE – 03/05/24: The Kentucky State Police has authorized the Lexington PoliceMusic Department to release the name and photograph of the detective involved in the February 28, 2024, officer-involved shooting that occurred on Royal Avenue. 

The officer’s name and length of service are as follows: 

Detective Nicholas Music

  • Length of Service: 8 years
  • Detective Music sustained a non-life-threatening injury during the incident, which did not require hospitalization.
     

The officer-involved shooting is still under investigation by the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team.

UPDATE - 02/29/24: Three people have been charged in connection with a shooting that occurred last night on Royal Avenue.

Daquis Sharp, 27, was charged with Murder (Attempt) – Police Officer, Assault 2nd Degree – Police Officer, Criminal Mischief 1st Degree, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon and 6 counts of Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree.

Jatiece Parks, 19, was charged with Murder (Attempt) – Police Officer, Assault 2nd Degree – Police Officer, Criminal Mischief 1st Degree, and 6 counts of Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree.

Zalan Dulin, 19, was charged with Murder (Attempt) – Police Officer, Assault 2nd Degree – Police Officer, Criminal Mischief 1st Degree, and 6 counts of Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree.

They are currently being held at the Fayette County Detention Center.

A Lexington Police detective has been involved in an on-duty shooting.

On February 28, 2024, at approximately 11:54 p.m., detectives were following up on an investigation in the 900 block of Royal Avenue when unknown suspect(s) opened fire on a detective who was inside a vehicle. The detective suffered minor injuries that did not require hospitalization and was able to return fire. At this time, no other injuries are known.

Three people were detained at the scene and the investigation remains ongoing.

The detective had their issued body-worn camera (BWC) and all BWC footage related to the incident is being reviewed.

The incident is being investigated by the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team, and the Lexington Police Department’s Public Integrity Unit will conduct an internal review of the incident. The detective will be placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation, per department policy.
