Evening commuters urged to drive carefully

Streets & Roads and Water Quality day shift will stay until 8 p.m. to maximize cleaning efforts for neighborhood roads. The night shift will continue to monitor and treat any untreated ranked roads, problem areas or calls for service from Public Safety until 8 a.m. Saturday. 

Residents should take extra caution when driving this evening. The roads can be slick after refreezing when the temperatures drop. Remember that extreme cold temperatures require additional precautions. The area is expected to face a wind chill of minus 5 to minus 15 on Saturday morning. Wear multiple layers when going outside and limit exposed skin by wearing a hat, gloves and face coverings. 

Parks & Recreation has canceled the following events for Saturday, Jan. 20: Explore More Outdoors at Jacobson Park, Better Than You Found It at Jacobson Park, and the Owl Prowl at Raven Run Nature Sanctuary. Changes to Jan. 21 events include: The New Year Thru Hike III at Raven Run Sanctuary is canceled and The Lexington Black History Guided Walk at Charles Young Park is postponed to March 30. Castlewood, Dunbar and Tates Creek Community Centers are closing at 5:30 p.m. today.

The Samuel Brown Health Center and pharmacy are closed Saturday, Jan. 20, due to weather. Telehealth services will be available. 

Between 5 a.m. and 3 p.m. this afternoon, the Lexington Police Department responded to 22 non-injury collisions, four injury collisions, seven calls for motorist assistance and 11 traffic hazards. Drivers are reminded that some roadways could be slick and to be especially careful on bridges and overpasses as they are typically the first driving surfaces to get slick. 

The Office of Homelessness Prevention & Intervention Emergency Weather Plan remains in effect through the morning of Monday, Jan. 22. The plan includes expanded shelter services and free transportation to shelters. The Emergency Weather Plan and a list of shelters are available at lexingtonky.gov/homelessness-prevention-and-intervention. Residents who see someone who may need shelter should call the Lexington Police Department non-emergency number at (859) 258-3600.

Residents can get information on accidents, lane blockages, snow-and-ice trouble spots and road closures through the city’s Twitter accounts (@lexwrecks). They can also view traffic at major intersections in real time through the city’s traffic cameras at lexingtonky.gov/traffic.
