Wednesday morning brings extreme cold, use caution when traveling

Streets & Roads and Water Quality crews will continue to monitor road conditions throughout the night. The night crew will report to address any calls for service until Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m.

Residents should take extra caution when driving this evening. Roads will refreeze as temperatures drop and create icy driving conditions. Remember that extreme cold temperatures require additional precautions. The area is expected to face a wind chill of minus 9 on Wednesday morning. Wear multiple layers when going outside and limit exposed skin by wearing a hat, gloves and face coverings.

The Senior Center is open on Wednesday; however, instructor-led activities/classes are canceled, and lunch will not be served. The Lexington Senior Center’s satellite centers at the Bell House, Charles Young Center and Eldercrafters at the Black and Williams Center are closed Wednesday.

Between 5 a.m. and 3 p.m. this afternoon, the Lexington Police Department responded to 15 non-injury collisions, 13 injury collisions, 10 traffic hazards and eight calls for motorist assistance. Drivers are reminded that some roadways could be slick and to be especially careful on bridges and overpasses as they are typically the first driving surfaces to get slick.

The Office of Homelessness Prevention & Intervention Emergency Weather Plan remains in effect through the morning of Thursday, Jan. 18. The plan includes expanded shelter services and free transportation to shelters. The Emergency Weather Plan and a list of shelters are available at lexingtonky.gov/homelessness-prevention-and-intervention. Residents who see someone who may need shelter should call the Lexington Police Department non-emergency number at (859) 258-3600.

The city’s snow removal plan with street and sidewalk rankings is available at lexingtonky.gov/snow. Get the latest on city snow removal, delays, closings and more at lexingtonky.gov/snowupdates.

Residents can get information on accidents, lane blockages, snow-and-ice trouble spots and road closures through the city’s Twitter accounts (@lexwrecks). They can also view traffic at major intersections in real time through the city’s traffic cameras at lexingtonky.gov/traffic.
