Lexington residents interested in the city’s next “Clean Slate” expungement clinic are urged to complete an online advanced registration form.
The Clean Slate clinics focus on dismantling barriers to employment, education, and housing. They were recommended in 2020 by the Mayor’s Commission for Racial Justice and Equality. So far, the city has held four clinics.
“Our Clean Slate Expungement Clinics have been very popular, and have helped many members of our community get back on their feet,” Mayor Linda Gorton said. “Advance registration gives us the opportunity to reach more residents, and get more records expunged.”
Gorton said the next expungement clinic will take place in April 2024. A specific date has not been set yet.
Clean Slate clinics give Fayette County residents the opportunity to begin the expungement process for low-level criminal offenses, providing second chances for employment, education, and housing.
“We know that low-level offenses can keep members of our community from accessing basic needs. The goal of expungement is to further promote equity, inclusion and diversity within our community,” said Tiffany Brown, the city’s Equity and Implementation Officer, who works alongside community partners to produce programs and resources that support the community, including coordinating Clean Slate Expungement Clinics.
In Kentucky, expungement reform has been occurring for over 30 years. In 2016, the state legislature expanded expungement eligibility to include additional Class D felonies. In 2019, the expungement law was expanded to include hundreds of Class D felonies.
