Holiday lights not quite shining like they were last year? Don’t throw them out. Recycle them through the city’s special collection drive. String lights, batteries and other electronics should never go in your curbside recycle bin or a mixed recycling dumpster. To make recycling right convenient, Lexington’s Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works partners with businesses in Fayette County to host a special collection drive each winter.
This is the sixth annual holiday lights drive. Nearly 3,000 pounds of electronics were collected for recycling last year. Since its inception, the annual program has resulted in more than 10,000 pounds of electronics being diverted from the landfill.
String lights, extension cords, light sensors, power strips, timers, electric candles, household batteries and other electronics can be taken to the city’s Electronics Recycling Center year-round, 1306 Versailles Rd. Visit lexingtonky.gov/eWaste for hours of operation.
Collection bins will be available beginning Tuesday, Nov. 21, at the following drop-off locations. The collection will end on Jan. 14, 2024.

Lights cannot go in curbside recycle carts or mixed recycling dumpsters. They get tangled in equipment, causing delays and damage at the Recycle Center. Batteries present a fire hazard.
