City to decommission traffic signal at Short and Jefferson

The Division of Traffic Engineering will decommission the traffic signal at Short Street and Jefferson Street on Monday, April 3, 2023, around 9 a.m., weather permitting.

Stop signs will be posted, and the existing signal will remain in all-red, flash mode for 90 days while travelers become familiar with the change. Traffic Engineering will request permanent decommissioning from the Urban County Council after the 90-day period if all goes as anticipated.

Traffic Engineering studies signalized intersections throughout Lexington on a regular basis to qualify the continued necessity for the respective traffic control device. Some reasons signals are removed include reductions in fuel consumption, utility costs to the city, and maintenance activities.
