Louisville and Lexington partner to present a free two-day ADU virtual conference with national industry experts

Kentucky’s two largest cities recently adopted Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) ordinances permitting secondary dwelling units on single-family lots without lengthy approval processes. These ADUs are smaller independent units that can provide a flexible housing option not previously permitted. The Louisville and Lexington ADU conference, held virtually, 8:30 a.m. until noon on Feb. 1 and 2, will provide answers to questions for those in the real estate, lending, building & design, and appraisal industries. The conference will be held live via Zoom. Registration is available at imaginelexington.com/ADU-Conference or on the webinar website.

The first session, “Mornings with Planning ADU Edition,” will kick off the conference with representatives from each city’s Council. Councilwoman Nicole George from Louisville’s District 21 and Councilmember Hannah LeGris from Lexington’s District 3 will be joined by planning staff from their respective cities to discuss the basics of ADU regulations and the partnerships, advocacy efforts, and policy approach involved in the process.

Four seminars will follow the opening session, bringing industry leaders from Durham, N.C., Los Angeles, Calif., Schaumburg, Ill. and Portland, Ore. to answer specific issues affecting each of the industries directly involved in the construction and financing of ADUs. These presenters will bring their national expertise from locations where ADUs are common, and provide practical ways to break down barriers to construction. Opportunities will be available for questions and answers at the conclusion of each session.

The concluding session will feature keynote speaker Daniel Parolek, presented by AARP Kentucky. Mr. Parolek is the architect and planner who created the concept of “Missing Middle Housing” and wrote the book, “Missing Middle Housing: Thinking Big and Building Small to Respond to Today’s Housing Crisis.” He will discuss why ADUs are an important initial step in addressing housing issues, and why cities and developers need to think beyond the use of ADUs to effectively address housing issues.

The ADU conference is geared toward industry professionals who could benefit from this free training opportunity, but all are invited to learn more about ADUs. Register today!
