Mayor Linda Gorton and Councilmember James Brown today cut the ribbon to officially open a new futsal court at Martin Luther King Park.
“We are so excited to bring this beautiful new futsal court to MLK Park and the Winburn neighborhood,” said Mayor Linda Gorton. “The Winburn Community Partners Team, which was developed in 2017 by our ONE Lexington initiative, surveyed children in the Winburn neighborhood and heard an overwhelming request for a futsal court at this neighborhood park. This is a perfect example of the city and Parks & Recreation working with the community to give children and adults the opportunity to get out, stay active, and engage with their friends.”
Futsal, which is a hard-court variation of soccer, has continued to increase in popularity. The new court in MLK Park, 1625 McCullough Drive, joins futsal courts in Valley Park and Castlewood Park.
“We love our community’s passion for this sport, and we loved having the opportunity to work with them to bring this new court to the park for them to use,” said District 1 Councilmember James Brown. “Sports are a wonderful way to meet new people, engage with neighbors, and stay healthy and active. The Winburn community can visit MLK Park and be proud knowing they were the reason this court has been built.”
The new court has already hosted competitive matches. It replaces two tennis courts that had largely been inactive and fallen into disrepair.
This addition of this court is part of a wider Parks & Recreation initiative to identify sports needs around the city, and use existing infrastructure to fulfill those needs.
