Art by Nature offers an artistic take on Lexington’s trees

Experience the beauty of Lexington’s trees by visiting the Art by Nature: Trees exhibit in the Julietta Market at Greyline Station (101 W. Loudon Ave). The opening reception is Thursday, October 14 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The gallery will feature 67 pieces of work from 38 local artists inspired by 23 trees in Fayette County. Sculpture, poetry, painting and multimedia collage are all among the mediums included in the exhibit. Pieces are available for purchase; a portion of the proceeds will go to the city’s Reforest at Home program.

Art by Nature, formerly known as Paint by Nature, is in its fourth year. Lexington’s Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works launched the program to highlight local native landscapes and plants as represented by local artists.

“Central Kentucky is a region bursting with talent,” says Nancy Albright, Commissioner of Environmental Quality and Public Works. “Art by Nature is a perfect opportunity to highlight this talent and the local landscapes that make the Bluegrass special.”

The exhibit will be available during the building’s normal hours of operation, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. There will also be the following events, free and open to the public.

  • Opening reception: Thursday, October 14, 5 -7 p.m.
Celebrate the exhibit opening with local eats and live music from local favorite Honeychild! Participate in a gallery scavenger hunt and visit the “Ask an Arborist” booth. At 6 p.m., the winning pieces will be announced, as judged by local artist Lucy Azubuike.
  • LexArts HOP: Friday, November 19, 5-8 p.m.
Make Art by Nature a stop on your hop. Stop by the "Ask an Arborist” booth to find out what trees are best suited to your home. Complete the gallery scavenger hunt. Don’t miss the gelatin printmaking demonstration by Bluegrass Printmakers.
  • Closing reception: Friday, December 17, 5-7 p.m.
Don’t’ miss out! Closing reception is your last chance to complete the gallery scavenger hunt. Make your own tree-inspired button and take home an Art by Nature ornament craft kit. Gamify your garden. Play Plant by Numbers to layout your dream landscape using native plants and trees.

Exhibition visitors can vote for their favorite work. A People's Choice award will be presented at the closing reception in December.
