Users of the Waze navigation app now get advanced notice of active school zones and pedestrian crossings when driving through Lexington.
Lexington has 49 midblock pedestrian crossings. These crosswalks are located in between intersections that are too far apart to be convenient for pedestrians. Signs, road markings and sometimes flashing lights notify drivers about upcoming crosswalks. Now, the Waze app will also tell drivers when they are approaching a crosswalk.
Waze will also let drivers know when they are approaching one of Lexington’s 51 active school zones.
“Providing this information to drivers will help make our streets safer for students and pedestrians,” said David Filiatreau, Traffic Engineering Manager. “Protecting vulnerable road users is a priority for the city, and this technology is a tool that gives drivers a heads up to watch out for pedestrians who might be in the roadway.”
Alerts are enabled by the Glance® Smart Cities platform that Lexington’s Traffic Engineering division uses to monitor and control safety devices.
