Lexington Fire Department names newest Junior Fire Chief

The Lexington Fire Department is proud to name fifth grader McKayla McKinney our 2023 Junior Fire Chief! The fifth-grader attends Dixie Magnet Elementary on Lexington’s north side at 1940 Eastland Parkway.

The Junior Fire Chief Program is just one of the ways the Lexington Fire Department Division of Community Services educates our community. Along with the Citizen’s Fire Academy, our Smoke Alarm program, and hands-only CPR Classes, the Lexington Fire Department places a priority on educating Lexington and its residents. October is Fire Prevention Month and a busy month for the LFD, with truck visits to schools to reinforce messages about fire safety. This year’s fire prevention theme is “Cooking Safety Starts with YOU.”

“Cooking fires are the number 1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries,” Fire Chief Jason Wells said. “And McKayla put together a wonderful poster and essay that stood out to us.”

Chief Jason Wells said, “McKayla will serve as a dignitary on behalf of the Lexington Fire Department, tour local businesses and landmarks, be interviewed by the media, and attend meetings with me, our LFUCG council, and Mayor Linda Gorton” and in all of those experiences “McKayla will be able to share her message of fire safety with a wide audience of people.”
