As the temperature cools down, many trees are already changing color and losing their leaves.
Like last year, the City will offer expanded weekly collection starting Oct. 28 to make sure that leaves can be collected efficiently through the fall season. There are multiple ways to dispose of your leaves this fall:
- Keep them. Mow leaves back into your lawn. It’s free fertilizer! You do not need a special mower to mulch your leaves. Leaves are also great for backyard composting.
- Let the City take them. If you have City waste collection, yard waste is picked up each week on your regular collection day. Fill your gray yard cart first and then use paper yard waste bags. No plastic bags, please.
- Yard waste bags may be picked up by a different crew than carts. Crews will collect daily until 5:30 p.m. except on Halloween when they will stop at 5 p.m. Missed yard waste will be collected the next makeup day (Wednesday or Saturday). Do not contact LexCall about missed collection until after 5:30 p.m. on your scheduled collection day.
- If you don’t have a gray cart or need a new one, call LexCall at 311 or submit a request online.
- Leaves raked to the curb but not put in bags or carts will not be collected. Never dispose of leaves or other yard waste by putting them in the street. That can clog storm drains, leading to flooding and traffic hazards.
- Bring leaves to the City mulching facility. Through December 2024, Fayette County residents can take yard waste to the Haley Pike Waste Management Facility for free. Proof of residency is required. Haley Pike is located at 4216 Hedger Lane. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Arrive by 5 p.m. to guarantee service. The facility is closed Wednesdays and weekends.
No yard waste carts, bags or bundles will be collected Thanksgiving week, Nov. 25 – 29. Trash and recycling will be collected that week Monday – Wednesday, with Wednesday serving as the makeup day for Thursday and Friday collection.
Free leaf chutes are available to help funnel leaves into your cart or yard bags. There is a limit of one chute per household. While supplies last, you can pick up a leaf chute from:
- The City’s Electronics Recycling Center, 1306 Versailles Road. Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., Wednesday from noon – 4 p.m., and Saturday from 8 a.m. – noon.
- The Lexington Senior Center, 195 Life Lane. Hours are Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
