Nature Hop promises a weekend of outdoor fun

Lexington is hosting the 4th Annual Nature Hop the weekend of Sept. 18 and 19. Nature Hop is a series of events focused on connecting people with green spaces throughout Fayette County.

Every Nature Hop activity is open to the public. Some events require prior registration. To view up-to-date information on these events and how to register (if required), please visit lexingtonky.gov/NatureHop.

Nature Hop was inspired by the Long Day of Urban Nature, an event that Beate Popkin attended in Berlin in 2017. “From Saturday afternoon to Sunday evening, conservation and gardening groups joined city officials in hosting more than 500 events, from bird walks to poetry readings,” she said. “My husband and I participated in two events and enjoyed them tremendously. An obvious question occurred to me: would such an idea fly in Lexington?”

The answer has been a resounding yes thanks to the variety of individuals and organizations who volunteer to host events. This year’s Nature Hop includes 24 events. Examples include:

  • a self-guided scavenger hunt,
  •  tagging butterflies,
  • a history tour,
  • canoeing,
  • a picnic with ukuleles,
  • yoga,
  • nature-inspired embroidery, and
  • much more.

Residents are invited to kick-off Nature Hop by watching A Bug’s Life at Shillito Park’s Babe Ruth Baseball Complex parking lot. Bring lawn chairs and blankets or watch from your vehicle. The movie will begin at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept.18, with food vendors and activities happening at 6:30 p.m.
