Athens Walnut Hill Pike Investigation

At around 10:34 a.m., Monday, May 16, 2022, officers responded to the 6000 block of Athens Walnut Hill Pike for a report of trespassing. When officers arrived, they located two subjects, one male and one female.

When officers made contact with the subjects, the male threatened to harm himself with a firearm. The female was able to move away from the male. Officers attempted to deescalate and negotiate with the male for an extended period of time to get him to distance himself from the firearm. While continuing to deescalate the situation, the male discharged the firearm, striking himself. No officers fired their weapons.

Officers rendered first aid, until paramedics, who were staged at the scene, reached the subject. The male was declared deceased.

The deceased victim’s name will be released by the Fayette County Coroner’s Office.
