Representatives from Kentucky American Water, Kentucky Utilities, Columbia Gas, Kinetic, and the city’s Division of Environmental Services today joined Mayor Linda Gorton as she declared April 15 – 19 “Work Zone Awareness Week” in Lexington.
National Work Zone Awareness Week is an annual spring campaign held at the beginning of construction season to encourage safe driving through work zones. The theme of this year’s National Work Zone Awareness Week is “Work zones are temporary. Actions behind the wheel can last forever.”
“We rely on our road workers to improve our city and respond in a time of need,” Gorton said. “By slowing down, using caution, and paying attention, we can all do our part to keep everyone safe.”
In Kentucky in 2022, there were 1,074 work-zone-related crashes resulting in 271 injuries and 6 deaths.
Drivers are urged to comply with reduced speed limits, stay fully attentive by eliminating distractions, and be watchful for roadway workers and their equipment when approaching a work zone.
