Lexington Police officers have been involved in an officer-involved shooting.
At around 7:49 p.m. Sunday, March 27, 2022, officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Gay Place for an armed suicidal subject. While officers were en route, the Division of Enhanced 911 received an additional call of shots fired at the same location. After officers arrived, the subject stepped out of the residence with a handgun and rifle. Officers began to communicate with the subject directing him to drop the weapons. The subject refused and fired at officers. Officers returned fire, striking the subject.
The subject, a 43-year-old white male, sustained serious injuries. Emergency Care was summoned, and officers rendered aid. Paramedics from the Lexington Fire Department arrived and aided the subject on the scene before succumbing to his injuries.
Five Lexington Police officers returned gunfire. All officers were uninjured.
In accordance with Lexington Police Department policies, the officers had their issued Body Worn Cameras activated. The incident is being investigated by the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team and the department’s Public Integrity Unit will conduct an internal review of the incident. The officers will be placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation.
