Explore local creeks during Water Week

Celebrate Lexington’s fifth annual Water Week from March 16 – 23 with more than 20 events that encourage a connection with local waterways. People of all ages and abilities are invited to participate through a variety of in-person, virtual and self-guided opportunities.

This year, Water Week events include hikes at Raven Run and other city parks, rain garden presentations, a greenway ecology forum, litter cleanups, watershed walks, bioblitzes designed to capture information about flora and fauna and so much more. Families with children may be especially interested in one of the opportunities to hunt for “creek critters,” the macroinvertebrates that live in our streams.

Runners and walkers are encouraged to sign up for the sixth annual Reforest 5K on Saturday, March 23 at Hisle Farm Park, 3551 Briar Hill Road. The Reforest 5K, hosted by Johns Run/Walk Shop, raises money for Reforest the Bluegrass programs that provide tree planting opportunities in Lexington. All race participants can either take a tree home or donate it to be planted on their behalf during a Reforest event. Trees naturally collect and filter rainwater, making them the best land cover for protecting and maintaining our natural waterways.

Lexington businesses, schools, churches and non-profits that are interested in projects to improve water quality or reduce stormwater runoff are invited to attend a virtual information session about the Stormwater Quality Incentive Grant Program. The session will be offered twice, on Monday, March 18 at 6 p.m. and Wednesday, March 20 at 1 p.m.

Individual and self-guided activities include geocaching, storm drain stenciling and a tour of the Wolf Run Watershed.

Water Week is sponsored by the City of Lexington, the University of Kentucky and local watershed organizations. Find event details and register for the Reforest 5K on the Water Week webpage
