A Lexington Police officer has been involved in an on-duty shooting.
At 4:15 p.m. on February 7, 2023, officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of Lonan Court for a domestic violence incident involving a weapon. Officers were unable to make contact with anyone at the residence and learned that the victim had fled the area.
At around 5:04 p.m., officers and the Lexington Fire Department were dispatched back out to the residence for a report of wanton endangerment involving a collision. The driver attempted to strike an individual and then struck a residence. Officers made contact with the driver who was in the vehicle and refused to exit. The driver backed into a police cruiser and then accelerated forward almost striking several Lexington firefighters. In response to the life-threatening situation, an officer fired their weapon, striking the driver. The driver fled the scene and was pursued by officers through parts of Fayette and Scott Counties before coming to a stop in Coldstream Park.
Members of the Lexington Police Department's Crisis Negotiation Unit were able to make contact with the driver, who eventually exited the vehicle. The driver was taken to a local hospital with reported non-life-threatening injuries.
In accordance with Lexington Police Department policies, the officer had their issued body-worn camera (BWC) activated.
As per policy, the incident is being investigated by the Kentucky State Police Critical Incident Response Team, and the department’s Public Integrity Unit will conduct an internal review of the incident. As per policy, the officer will be placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the investigation.
