City crews worked overnight to treat and plow roadways, focusing on major arterials, connecting streets and collector streets. Plowing and treatment will continue throughout the day.
The extreme cold limits the effectiveness of salt. Road conditions are slick. When driving, watch for black ice, especially on bridges and overpasses. Go slow and leave extra room between your car and other vehicles at all times.
Residents with city waste collection will be serviced today. Please note that trucks may run behind their typical schedule due to icy road conditions.
Lexington City Hall is operating on a two-hour delay today, Thursday, Jan. 28, for employees who are working from the office. Employees who are working from home should start at the regular time.
Below freezing temperatures are expected to persist throughout the day. Dress appropriately if going outdoors, and follow these safety guidelines if using extra heating equipment to keep your home warm:
· Follow manufacturers recommended guidelines for use.
· Have HVAC, fireplace, etc. inspected annually by a qualified professional.
· Always plug space heaters directly into the outlet. (Never use an extension cord.)
· Keep your thermostat at a steady temperature.
· Never leave your space heater unattended.
· Never use a product for anything other than its intended purpose.
o Ex: Never use your stove to heat your home.
o Ex: Never use an outdoor heating/cooking appliance inside.
Protect your water pipes during these extended periods of below-freezing weather by opening cabinets to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.
The LFUCG Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention has activated the Community Emergency Winter Weather Plan through the morning of Friday, January 29. The plan may be extended at that time.
f you know or see someone that appears to need emergency shelter, please dial (859) 533-9199 (before 10 p.m.) or (859) 494-0470 (10 p.m. – 8 a.m.). The Hope Center Warming Shelter for men 18 years and older is OPEN. All those that can go to this shelter will be required to do so. The Salvation Army for women and women with children is OPEN. All those that can go to this shelter will be required to do so. The Community Emergency Winter Weather Plan includes enough shelter capacity for those that are willing to accept shelter.
