Snow is back to take a second swipe at Lexington today.
“We’ve replenished our salt from the 2,600 tons we used last week, so our barns are once again full. And our snow contractor has four plows ready to go if we need them,” Mayor Linda Gorton said.
With snow in the forecast we’re encouraging citizens to stay off the roads if possible, Gorton said. “As always, please help your neighbors – especially the elderly, and protect your pets from the bitter cold.”
As of now, organizers of the Martin Luther King Day Freedom March plan to go forward with the event. There are already plans for the traditional breakfast and commemorative program to be virtual.
Gorton called together representatives of city departments to discuss their weather plans:
DIVISION OF STREETS AND ROADS
City road crews have been monitoring road conditions since 4 a.m. today and began treating the roads at 8 a.m. Crews are working 12-hour shifts, said Director Rob Allen. Once again, drivers from Waste Management, Sanitary Sewer, Environmental Services, Code Enforcement, Sewer Treatment, and Parks will assist with snow removal.
The City’s contractor, Red River Ranch, has four plows ready to be used if needed.
LEXINGTON POLICE
Lexington Police remind motorists to give themselves plenty of time to get to their destinations, increase the distance between themselves and other vehicles, and put their vehicles in a lower gear to get better traction. Also in case of an emergency, try to have a full tank of gasoline, water, snacks, and other items to help you stay warm in your vehicle.
LEXINGTON FIRE
The Fire Department is fully staffed and works closely with all City divisions to meet the challenges of inclement weather. There are 144 line personnel on duty today for immediate response to emergencies, as well as the full complement of administrative and support staff.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
Since the City is closed Monday for the Martin Luther King holiday, Waste Management is not scheduled for any pickups on Monday. To prepare for the possibility of snow, the Division has already covered downtown and other high-use locations. Decisions about Tuesday pick-up will be made on Monday.
OFFICE OF HOMELESSNESS PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION
The Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention activated its Community Winter Weather Response Plan through Monday, triggering extended services to accommodate those who are seeking shelter from the cold weather, said Director Polly Ruddick.
Shelter information has been provided to Lexington Police and Fire, churches, emergency rooms and hospital staff, as well as a large variety of stakeholders. Lextran is providing free rides to shelters.
Residents who see someone who may need shelter should call Lexington Police at (859) 258-3600, the non-emergency number. In case of an emergency, call 911.
LEXINGTON PARKS AND RECREATION
Raven Run and McConnell Springs will be closed. All classes at Artworks are canceled today.
