HVAC PERMITTING & INSPECTIONS

The Division of Building Inspection began it's HVAC program January 1, 2003, any HVAC units installed from this date forward need to be permitted and inspected . The HVAC program is responsible for issuing all commercial and residential HVAC permits, including new construction, remodeling work, and change out systems. In order to obtain a permit for HVAC work, you must hold a Masters HVAC Contractor's license, issued through the Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings & Construction, and must be a registered contractor with the Division of Building Inspection. The Division of Building Inspection's HVAC Section is also responsible for inspecting all HVAC work, including but not limited to, HVAC new installations and change out units. Homeowner HVAC Permits:

Homeowners who own their residence, wishing to perform their own HVAC change out work, can obtain a "Homeowner's HVAC Permit" by submitting proof of ownership.

Note: Only one (1) homeowner permit for construction of a NEW home shall be issued to an individual within a five (5) year period.

Residential HVAC Permits:

HVAC Contractors wishing to obtain permits for Single Family Residential changeouts may purchase permit cards. One Initial Permit card will cover one Single Family HVAC Complete system changeout for the price of $75, an additional permit card will need to be purchased for each additional HVAC System being changed out in one single family house for the price of $50.

Instructions for placement of HVAC permit cards on Single Family HVAC Changeouts

If a complete HVAC system is being replaced, the permit card for the system is to be placed on the front panel of the indoor unit. If only an outdoor unit is being replaced, the permit card is to be placed on the front panel of the outdoor unit.

HVAC Contractors wishing to obtain permits for Multi Family changeouts or for New Construction Multi Family shall refer to the Multi Family Changeout & New Construction Application.

HVAC Contractors wishing to obtain permits for Single Family New Construction, will need to fill out the Single Family New Construction HVAC Permit Application.

Commercial HVAC Permits:

All Commercial HVAC work must be done by an HVAC Contractor.

Commercial HVAC change out permits can be obtained by completing theapplication for HVAC Commercial construction.

Commercial HVAC new construction, remodeling, or adding of conditioned space must have a completed HVAC application for Commercial Construction and be accompanied by 2 sets of plans. An application for new Commercial HVAC work must be submitted and will be reviewed by an HVAC plans examiner. The HVAC Contractor will be notified when the Commercial HVAC permit is approved and ready for pickup.

Commercial HVAC permits must be submitted, approved and paid for before the HVAC Commercial permit is considered valid for work to commence.

Additional Fees for HVAC work being done without proper permits:

All HVAC work that has commenced without proper permitting will be subject to an additional minimum fee of $500 per a required permit. Permit must be posted as outlined above to be considered valid.
